Painful Sex / Dyspareunia

Dyspareunia is medical term defined as recurrent as well as persistent genital pain experienced at the time of sexual intercourse which is not exclusively caused by vaginismus or even due to lack of lubrication.

Three different types of pain can be experienced due to Dyspareunia:
  • Superficial Dyspareunia: This type of pain occurs at the time of attempted penetration which is secondary to that of vaginismus or anatomic conditions
  • Vaginal Dyspareunia: This type of pain occurs due to friction and lack of lubrication and also during arousal disorders.
  • Deep Dyspareunia: This is one type of pain which mostly occurs due to presence of pelvic disease.
Prevalence of Dyspareunia:

Presence of dyspareunia is found in almost 14% women and varies among women of different ages and mostly between 18 to 24 years of age. Pain at the time of sexual intercourse can also be found in men but the available percentage is negligible in comparison to the one found in women. In short, dyspareunia is primarily a known female sexual dysfunction.

  • Infection caused by Yeast
  • Vulvodynia
  • Inflammatory Disease of Pelvic area
  • Tumors present in Pelvic zone
  • Vaginal Atrophy

  • Decreases in estrogens after Postmenopausal period
  • Trauma at the time of Childbirth
  • Cancer in Vulvar
  • Infections in Vaginal area
  • STIs
  • Eczema/Psoriasis
  • Genital surgeries or procedures
